State Road 4A’s Former Glory

Welcome to one of the Keys NEWEST historical markers!

This newly erected marker celebrates State Road 4A’s former glory and importance to the Florida Keys infrastructure.  Completed in 1928, its two separate road segments were connected only by ferry service till 1935 when a hurricane claiming over 400 lives stopped all construction forever. Since the hurricane, most of State Road 4A was abandoned or turned into local streets. A small portion of it can be seen in the background and is now part of the Florida Keys ‘Heritage Trail’.

Y0u can find one of the Florida Keys NEWEST historical markers at Mile Marker 24.7 on US-1 bayside.
