The Wright Brothers… Orville, Wilbur & Agustín?

Though not a Wright Brother, Agustín Parlá Orduña was also a historic record-breaking American Key West aviator.

Known as the “Great Cuban Aviator”, Agustín was born in Key West, Fla. on October 11, 1887 of  Cuban parents exiled during the struggle for their country’s independence. He was the first man to fly the 119 miles over the sea from Key West, Florida to El Mariel, Cuba on May 19, 1913. Not bad for a man of 25 years! Just think, from the first flight by the Wright Brothers on December 17, 1903 to crossing an ocean 9 years 5 months later facing near certain death if lost at sea for failing.

You can find this scaled replica paying homage to a Key West hometown hero inside of the ‘El Meson de Pepe Restaurant’ at Mallory Square in Key West hanging from the rafters for all to marvel. Below is shown a section of the wall dedicated to this fearless act.

Just wanted to thank you for all the effort you put in to bring us a daily reminder of the place we love so much. I’m not sure you hear it enough so we wanted to make sure that you know your blog is appreciated. Keep up the great work!

    • Thanks Len, No I don’t hear it much but thanks a bunch for your cotinued input and comments. All comments are welcomed and appreciated. My family and I grew up in the Keys, 3 out of 4 of us kids were born there with myself being the 4th, I was born on vacation 2 weeks early in Washington DC while still living in Key West. I love Key West and enjoy doing the blogs even if it were only you and I reading them. Take care, thanks again for the great comment!

Do you have anything on Domingo Rosillo who made a similar flight around the same time as Parla?

    • Thanks so much for your reading the blog and comment. No I don’t have any info but I’ll be more than happy to inquire and see if I can find out anything about it.

There is a photo and blurb on the Key West Historical Society page, http://www.kwahs.com/2007_05_01_archive.html , but I would like to know if there are more photos or info. I am involved in an effort to re-enact Rosillo’s flight from Key West to Havana using a replica of his monoplane, it’s in the early stages of planning right now, but hopefully will happen next May, 2013.
